Hello everyone out there in jeep land. I am looking for some input on a Jeep TJ that i may or may not purchase from a family friend for $1000. He priced it at that because all he wants is to get the money back he spent on the new tires it has. It has been sitting in his driveway for months so i finally went over and asked him about it. Here's what i know:
1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport
4.0L I6 5 Speed
Purchased from the Jersey shore
Has been driven for several years - Virginia and back (at least 400 miles each way)
The engine will run (have yet to see it run) but after about ten minutes it will die out
The Jeep has next to new Mickey Thompson Baja Claws 31x10.5
He suggested that i get a new engine for it because that is what he was going to do to solve the engine problem...but im thinking maybe there is a way around that? I've been reading up on TJ forums and a lot of people are saying that the throttle body sensor (TPS) could produce problems similar to those that have been described to me from the owner. So im thinking that i should maybe try something like that out first and maybe some other stuff to get it going before i go and buy another engine? What would be the right move here?
Also the jeep could use a lot more work outside of the engine. I need to replace or repair:
Engine(maybe)
tps(maybe)
Seats
hood
Fender flare rust
body rust
soft top
door trim
bumpers
sway bar
These are just some things that i noticed after inspecting the pictures i have taken. Im sure there are more things but i havent dove all that deep into it yet. As far as exterior and engine goes i can easily check all that out because the jeep is right around the corner from me. Anyway here are the parts that i would like to upgrade and/or add on:
Larger tires - 33-35
Lift kit - 4"
Custom bumper
back seat (strong maybe because i do like the small amount of storage space i currently have with them non-existent)
hard top (it gets very cold in New Jersey)
Those are parts that i would like to add in the future once i get the engine situation squared away.
So bottom line is...is it worth it??? I have all the tools necessary to do a full "restore" as i work for a construction company with a full shop. I could even do an engine swap because we have a lift. I am going to be a high school senior so money inst all that plentiful but by the end of the summer August 29th for me i will have enough to buy the jeep with about $500 left over. Any opinions would be great. Thanks a lot.
