Hp d30 vs lp d30 swap questions

vendredi 31 juillet 2015

Ok. So ive read the write ups and alrwady know the pros of the hp over the LP. I have a few questions rwgarding other matters that searching is not answeeing. The HP I bought it from a 98 xj.

1: The HP D30 i have has 3.55s in it. Do i need a new carrier for 3.73s or not? If im understanding this correctly the new carrier is needed for 4.10s and up. But some searches are saying the carrier break is 3.73.

2: I have a master rebuild kit for my stock LP. Will that rebuild kit work in the HP i have? I know somw year HP D30s use shims while others use a cruah sleeve like the LP.

3: How do I tell if I have a short or long pinion? I need to buy new gears to match the rear but i saw there is an option for long and short pinion and i have no clue which i have or how to tell the difference.

4: Does anone have the rebuild speca for a dana 30 hp and lp? Preload spec, pinion nut trq, carrier cap torq, backlash.

All help is appreciated.

AC Low Pressure Side High. Help Please!!!

Hey Guys,

This last week I replaced the evaporator on my 1994 Jeep XJ. *Reason was I had a small leak that I was never able to track down with dye and so I suspected that the only place left could be the evaporator. Oddly enough when I replaced the evaporator I did not see any dye on it as well.*

After I installed the evaporator and put the dash all back together. I pumped the system for 30 minutes and the gauge read -28 on the low side. Now here is where I think I may have made some big problems. I turned the engine on and began charging with both the high side and low side valves open. I noticed this right away when I saw my low side shoot up to 100 psi. I turned everything off and pumped the system again for 40 min. to make sure all the air was out and got -28 on the low side. I put one can in and had pressures on the low side stay at 35. I closed the valves and put on the second 12 ounce can and instantly the pressure shot back up to 100 on the low side. *The high side valve was closed for both cans*

During this process the compressor has never kicked on and I am not sure why?

My two thoughts are:
- Possible bad expansion valve. Not sure what the symptoms would be if it was bad. The second thing is when I reinstalled the expansion valve I am not 100% sure if there is a front or back to this. Meaning does it need to be flipped over because the freon only goes in one direction?

- Is my compressor bad (worked before the evap. replacement)? How could I tell if it is bad?

Thank you for your help here as I am not sure what my next step is!

Transmission not shifting

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum but have done some lurking and I am now looking for some help. I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7L V8. Long story short I blew the engine in it and got an amazing deal at work for a 4.7L HO from a 2004 overland. I have the new engine in, runs great however it seems extremely sluggish at slow speeds and isn't shifting. Apparently this could be caused by the limp mode. Any ideas what to try? Has this happened to anyone else? If this helps I swapped the engine, engine computer and the wiring harness during the swap.

Tires rubbing lower control arms, bad?

Is it bad if my tires rub the lower control arms when turning sharp? If so how can I fix it?
Thanks

tie rods

Just replaced all of my tie rod ends on the front end of my 2000 XJ with moog greasables and am wondering if I need to go out a buy an expensive torque wrench to torque them all to spec or if getting them good and tight will suffice.

Transmission Issue

Driving at about 60mph on the highway today, I heard what sounded like my rear fascia flapping around, or like a plastic piece of the wheel well slapping against the tire. I pulled over and saw nothing wrong. I hopped back in and attempted to shift from P or R, only to get a nasty grinding sound. A second attempt didn't get me into reverse either, so I put it in drive and was able to make it home for the few miles I had left. Under acceleration/load, the "flapping/slapping" sound went away, but when I had my foot off the gas, it would often come back.

Inspection at home:
- The pawl on the left side of the transmission seems to be moving properly when shifting through P-R-N-D.
- Trans fluid level is within normal limits and looks and smells fine.
- The grinding is definitely coming from inside the trans.
- After setting for about 10 minutes, another attempt at putting the jeep in reverse worked normally, no grinding at all. So, I guess at least that part of the issue is intermittent.

Any ideas on what these issues might be and if they are connected?

Thanks for any ideas.

Instrument Panel, Radio, Interior Lights, Now Won't Start

I'll apologize in advance, this may already be in a thread but I have looked everywhere!

To start, I got the dreaded "no bus" message, got the part and replaced. Instrument panel still not working, and now my radio does not work, nor do my interior lights or locks. And now, my jeep will start and then die after about 3 seconds or so. I took out the dash and it started right back up! But again, not starting. Fuel pump is good, checking battery now as well as fuses. I'm pretty sure it is electrical. And yes, I checked the cam position sensor, when I took it out, jeep wouldn't even turn. Put it back in, turned over but died immediately.

Not sure where to go from here, any ideas???

Thanks!

WJ 3" Lift - Rear shock size questions

Just added BB 2-1/2" F and 2" R to my Upcountry packaged WJ.
My rear shock max extension is 24-1/2" <frame held by jackstands>
<I'm also using a 2" longer swaybar>
How do I measure what compressed would be?

Bilstein chart lists this for 1-2" of lift
Bilstein 33-236957 = 15.12" compressed and 24.35" extended.
9.23" of travel

Bilstein chart lists this for 3.5"-4" of lift
Bilstein 33-151632 = 15.91" compressed and 25.93" extended.
10.02"of travel

When I disconnected the sway bar, it dropped an additional inch to make
25-1/2" of extension.

I'm so confused about this rear shock, I haven't even bothered measuring the front yet. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Does this mean the difference between BB and 4" long arm is only 3/4" of travel? What am I missing?

When I revved the engine it acted like It hit the rev limiter at 3000 rpm's , when it idled back down the CEL came on and it started Idling very rough and died . Now It will not start back.
The Codes It thru were P0172 and P0175

Excessive RPM (5000+) on startup

Hey all,

I have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler sport. I'm a pretty big beginner on jeeps and car maintenance, so please bear with me. Jeep was running perfectly until this morning when I tried to go to work. On startup the rpm sky rockets over 5k and within those few seconds I turn it off to prevent any kind of damage at that rpm. Anyone have any idea what the problem is and what I will need to check or do to fix it? Thanks

Brake bleeding issue

2002 TJ 4.0L

Last week I replaced my rear wheel cylinders as they were leaking pretty badly, during this time I also took the time to replace the drums and shoes. During this process I also bled the brake system, everything was good.

Since I havent touched the front brakes in a few years and everything was getting worn I decided to replace the front brake system as well today, that includes: Pads, rotors, calipers, and the drivers side steering knuckle (it was stripped out). Everything went smoothly until it was time to bleed the brakes.

First off I'd like to note that when I removed the calipers, i let the entire brake fluid system drain so I could add all new fluid. I bled the brakes from the rear passenger side, to rear drivers, to front passenger, to front drivers. The peddle was pushing tight by the time I reached the front drivers. Note I did all of this with the vehicle off. Now as I went to start the vehicle and push the brakes the peddle immediately went to the floor when I pushed on the brakes. The master cylinder is full, and I checked for leaks, there are none. With that said, with the vehicle off the brakes are tight and the peddle doesnt drop, but when the vehicle is on it drops to the floor. Anyone have any idea what im doing wrong? Thanks

Rear axle strength question

Alternatives to Rigid Industries?

Looking to add some lights but don't want to eat a arm and a leg on Rigid Dually's. Was looking into getting two mounted on the rear and two on the hood for now, probably a lightbar to come. I noticed Seward offroad and Cali Raised LED on CrawlOffroad but not sure how good they may be. Anyone have any suggestions for others or praise for those two?

has anybody put a 78/79 radius arm type dana 44 in their jeep? it has the radius arm mounts cast into the tube which would make it a worthless axle for a leaf set up, but does anybody make a 3 link kit to throw this in a jeep and use those cast in mounts that are already there? anybody done this?

Noobie Offroader here need some advice

Hi,
This is my first time here on this forum, a friend recommended it to me so i figured i would give it a try. I am looking to prepare my jeep to do some basic offroading and could use some help. I currently have a 99 jeep Cherokee sport 4x4 with 4.0 v6 engine and auto tranny everything is stock. After talking to several friends that 4x4 i have set my mind on a Rubicon Express Super flex kit that provides a 3.5" lift with full replacement leaf springs and twin tube shocks. My question is what else do i need to properly do this upgrade? I am trying to avoid messing with the drive shaft or any fabricating. I was thinking i should also get an adjustable front track bar but while im in there i would like to replace/upgrade anything that might be stressed or easily break from the lift. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Antifreeze/Coolant Question

So I bought a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L Hemi with 110,000 miles from a used dealer in another town. I inspected the vehicle inside and out. I asked the dealer if the vehicle had been inspected by a mechanic and if any work had been done to it since they received it. The answer was no and that it was clean and in great shape. I drove it around town and it was great. I bought it and drove the 130 miles home and everything was great. As soon as I pulled off the interstate, the engine temperature gauge shot up. I pulled into a parking lot, shut it off, opened the hood, and the antifreeze/coolant was dry. I began to worry that it was something that I accidentally missed in my original inspection and perhaps didn't notice on the entire drive home. I called the dealership and they called their mechanic. Turns out that the radiator had been replaced and it was done by an apprentice mechanic and he apparently forgot to refill the coolant. It took me a gallon of undiluted antifreeze/coolant and another gallon of water to dilute to fill the reservoir. It has been running fine since. My question is, what parts could have been affected by this (extremely stupid) mistake and how bad could the damage be? I have owned Hemis a long time and they have proven to be sturdy engines that can withstand a lot of abuse. But I like to take care of my vehicles and I'm worried.

Jeep Overheating - A/C + Low Speeds

Hi all,

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that my temperature had been spiking occasionally. I have since replace the radiator cap and put on a new fan clutch, but the problem remains.

If I am idling or at low speeds (<30mph) AND the A/C is on, then the temperature will creep up past the 220* mark and then suddenly spike into the red and show the "Check Gauges" light. I've come to learn that the spike is essentially an idiot light that late model Cherokee's have--the actual temperature is not spiking (consistent with physics).

But I'm concerned because I'd expect a functional vehicle to be able to maintain normal operating temperature at any speed, or idle, even with the A/C on. (Maybe this is too much to ask?)

What can I do that I haven't done already?

Couple notes:
 • I live in Texas, which is ungodly hot right now--103* on the dial right now. Maybe normal temps are too much to ask for.
 • The fan clutch I put in was the standard duty NAPA version (272318). I tried to put on the heavy duty one first, actually, but it was too thick! Bumped up against the radiator. Would a heavy duty clutch help, and if so, is there one that fits for real?

4.7L Engine Swap Information

Hello,

Are there any articles for swapping the 2005 4.7L for a 2008+ 4.7L? I would assume they are direct bolt up, if the only changes were in the compression and and adding spark plugs.

I come from a race car, and this 2005 4.7L has got to be the worst V8 ever made as far as power/efficiency goes. THe lack of performance aftermarket has me in dire straights here.

Do you think I would be better off selling my 2005 and getting a 2008? Because otherwise the car is perfect for me.

Vibration after skid plate install

Just put a M.O.R.E. engine/trans skid plate on our '13 JK. It fit great, no rubbing. But now we have a distinct "vibration" at various times. Not a "bad" kind of vibration but the front of the skid mounts to the engine mounts and the back to the cross member so it has turned the frame into a bit of a tuning fork. You can feel the engine/driveline working. Has anyone experienced this? And has anyone tried using isolators or something on the crossmember bolts to eliminate it? If so, what worked for you? Thanks

This half hardtop for 2007-2015 2-door Jeep Wrangler JKs turns your Jeep into an entirely new vehicle. You get the quietness and security of a hardtop that retains the ability to remove your Freedom Panels at will, but the top is easily removed by just one person. A GR8TOPS half hardtop gives you a functional bed for hauling anything from wet hunting gear to a load of mulch to filthy yard tools — anything you wouldn’t want in the Jeep with you.

A custom-engineered bulkhead molded specifically for the JK to seal the bed.

A tinted rear sliding window for ventilation and easy bed access.

The ability to be carried through any normal door into a house/apartment — no need for a garage or outdoor storage!

a mystery

I've got a 95 jeep cherokee 4.0L with 230k miles. I was driving and after pulling on the highway it suddenly began to run very rough. At times it even struggled to idle. The check engine light came on. It kicks out two error codes. The first is for the 02 sensor. The second is for the coolant temperature sensor. Here is what I've done so far:

- replaced the cap, rotor, spark plug wires and spark plugs
- replaced the 02 sensor.
- replace the coolant temperature sensor.
- performed a compression test on each cylinder.
- replace the crankshaft position sensor.
- replace the throttle position sensor.
- used a combustion test tool to check the radiator fluid. came out clean.

Nothing has made any difference and I still get the same codes. Any ideas? thanks!

Jeep Rental Around Rapid City?

Does anyone know of car rental agencies that rent a JK unlimited?
We are planning a trip to the Black Hills next summer (Early June). My dad was born and raised in Spearfish in the 30's. He would like to get back and get off the beaten track and explore some of the areas they ran around in when they were kids. Nothing extreme, just fire roads and maybee easy trails along with all the normal tourist stuff. We would love to put the top down when the weather is nice. I'm thinking of not towing my rig the 3,000 mile round trip.

Thanks

I need help with front lights 94 XJ

Wrecked my jeep need to replace grill, lights, wires everything up there but bumper fenders and hood. I have collected everything but wire harnesses. I have been searching the web on and off for months the best I can find are connectors and the dealer will only sell what including the entire transmissions set of harnesses for an outrageous amount.

Does anyone know a shop or online store, or am I going to have to go to a junkyard. Maybe I am using the wrong words/part names when I look so just to be clear I am looking for the collection of wires and bulb attachments for my headlights parking/running lights and turn signal/cornering lights that comes pre assembled all leads into one connection that male adapter that plugs into a wire connection under the hood near the air intake. I can take pictures.

New in Ky

Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm from Ky. My name is Alex. My wife and I inherited a 2001 Grand Cherokee last year with only 40k miles. But it's 2wd. I have recently decided to swap it to 4wd. So I've been keeping an eye out on the local Craigslist for a wrecked 4wd to do my swap. That's what brought me here. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions once I get into the project. Thanks for having me. Any questions just ask.

Transmission

I just bought this jeep and it has a 360 motor in it and it has a 4 speed and the best I can tell from reading, it looks like it is going to be a T18 transmission. Is this the transmission that would have came in a 1978. Also, would a 360 have came in this or would it have been a 304. The reason that I am asking this is because when I was changing the oil in the transmission, there was several chunks of metal that came out when I was changing the fluid. I have not drove it but from where I bought it to my shop. The guy I bought it from did not know anything about it but he drove it on a regular basis. He did say it would jump out of third gear some time. Would all of this be factory or has everything been changed out

Ground for amps

Hi, so putting a new system in my jeep. Was going to use a ground distribution box but don't want to drill holes to mount it. Seems easier to just ground to a bolt and I see that many use the seat mount bolt.

Have a question on grounding my amp and powered sub.

If you ground to the seat bolt:

So when you get water in the tub does it cause a problem with ground, electrical system for the stereo?

When grounding to the set bolt do you put the ground between the bolt and seat runner or under the runner to the tub?

Is there a better place/bolt to ground to behind the dash?

Thanks in advance for help.

new Moser amc 20 axles-bearing failure #2

I will try to keep this as brief as possible cause im at wits end. Couple weeks ago posted about my stock 2pc axles that I was able to rock the tires. Determined that possibly my wheel bearings were worn so I decided to upgrade to moser 1pc axles. Got axles delivered, seals and spacers knocked in housing, measured bearing protrusion and had bearings pressed on by reputable local off road shop. Installed driver side axle first then passenger side 2nd. Noticed there was a small gap between the brake backing plates and face of axle housing after bolted together. Figured it wasn't supposed to bolt up flat since bearings stick out from end of housing slighty to set preload.
Bolted tires back on and happen to attemp to spin the passenger tire and it was very difficult to turn by hand. Was thinking maybe after it spins a few times it would seat and turn better. Dropped it down off jack bleed brakes. Went to back out off shop and the passenger side that was hard to turn started screeching. Backed up and back four to five times and it stopped. Drove down road about mile without any noise came back and jacked it up to spin tire to see if it was still tight and you could rock the tire as before but it spun freely. Driver side tire also rocked but was difficult to turn. Took apart the passenger side and rollers from the bearing fell all over floor. Took driver side apart and the bearing came apart after I got it out housing and pulled outside race off. Was confused about what went wrong and posted about how tight the axle seal retainer was supposed to be because I thought I had over torqued the bolts holding on the backing plate crushing the bearings. Didn't call moser about it cause I thought it was my fault for over tightening the axle retainer bolts. Ordered a new bearing kit for both sides from moser. Was told by another jeep forum member about removing the thrust block from the carrier. Removed the thrust block before the new bearings arrived. Inspected ends of moser shafts and the were about 1/16" out of square on the end of spline and there was a wear circle around the center drilled hole on both shafts where it looked like it had rubbed the thrust block on both sides. So that made sense that I installed driver side first pushing thrust block towards passenger side and it bottomed out the thrust block making the passenger tire hard to turn. So I was at conclusion that unsquare ends of shaft bottoming out of thrust block caused me to preload the bearings to tight. Got new bearings delivered and rechecked bearing protrusion. Decided to use same inner seals and bearing spacers that I had initially put in housing because they were ok. Got old bearings pressed off and new seals and bearings pressed on by same shop. Installed them last night everything went together good except when the driver side axle was bolted in there was a little in and out play when pulling on wheel studs. The passenger side had no in and out free play. Bolted tires on. They spun free like they were suppose to but both tires had the rocking back and forth when you grab top and bottom of tire. It was just like it was before I ever changed anything when I had the 2pc axles. WTF? I removed tires and tightened the axle bolts a little more thinking maybe I needed more load to seat the bearings. Put tires back on and they still rocked. Thought about it for a few minutes and wondered if the bores in the ends of the housing were loose from years of use since it was like that before. Didn't think I had done anything wrong so I dropped it down and backed out of shop without any screeching. Went down road and didn't get 1/4 mile and the driver side screeched and the jeep shifted when it felt like it locked up. Limped home jacked up and that tire was hard to spin. Bearing failure again. Im at a loss and don't know what to do. Am I tightening the axle bolts too tight? Should I call moser engineering? Im exhausted. This was suppose to be an easy job. Please help me.

I'm doing a transfer case swap & my 2001 Sport, it has a 231J. I'm taking the 231J out & I have a 242J. I believe the 242J I have is a Police / Export transfer case. I'm trying to figure out if I actually have a 242J Police / Export transfer case.

How do I know if I have a normal 242J or a 242J Police / Export model???

Chevy 4.2 I6 engine swap for TJ Jeep 4.0 I6

As our 4.0 TJs are down on power compared with JK 3.6, I wondered if anyone had done an engine swap with the 290 Bhp Chevy 4.2 I6?
Would give the same power & the Chevy 4.2 is also very torquey!

Overheating

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 A few weeks ago I went to start my Jeep and it wouldn't even crank over so I thought my factory battery was finally bad. Bought a new battery and still the same problem. I tried to check fuses and nothing worked. Set for a few days and then started right up like nothing ever happened and so problem in that area since. But a week ago my Jeep started to overheat and then send a message "trans over temp". Parked it and got a new low coolant temp sensor, thermostat, and coolant. But still overheating and throwing the code P0117. Any info on each problem is appreciated. Thanks

Need picture of the pre 96 CD/Cassette radio

Hey guys, I'm trying to find a picture of the pre-96 Jeep Grand Cherokee CD/Cassette player radio. However, all I'm finding is the 96 and up ones. Is it just like this, but with the top mount instead of the side mount? If not, where are there differences and can anyone supply a picture?

CPS Question

So, when I picked up my ZJ and started going through the whole replace this and that rigamarole, it was equipped with this guy:

When I went to replace it, all I could find was the usual metal bracket one... so thinking there was some change over the years, I modified the bracket so that it fit (extra washers etc.)

I picked up a snapon mt2500 and one of the diag screens said "11 no crank reference signal". From googling, it looks like the original CPS was from a Dodge 1500 (95 ish?)... I'm going to pull it this weekend and take a closer look, but I'm wondering now which side I put the washers on... :-P Seems to run ok, but is hard to start.

Anyhoot, was curious if anyone else had that type of CPS?

tire question!

the front tires are wearing out faster than the rear(turning)
been thinking about replacing the two front with the rear which look really good
and replacing the two that are currently up front with new uni's (putting them on the rear)

will this cause issues with the quadra drive? It's been replaced still pretty new(Hover over my jeep<----)

the rear tires look almost new but the front are wearing pretty good
I love this Jeep but I almost wish I just bought a RWD Dakota or at least something that doesn't automatically use the front wheels
EDIT: This Jeep is primarily an on road vehicle, at least until lifted and I have extra cash for when I do wheel and break stuff

Dash lights making volt meter peg at 0

So when my dash lights come on it drops the volt meter by alot. The brighter I make the dash lights the lower the volts go. Also when the turn signal lights up in the dash it drops the volt meter down to about 10 when it blinks. Same when brake lights light up. Any thoughts as to what is causing this. New alternator also. BTW it's a 79 cj7.

Badlands TOMORROW (7/31)

Late notice - but a neighbor and I are running to Badlands in Attica tomorrow in my 89 Wrangler and his brand new (less than 1,000 miles) JK 4 door - basically just looking to play around and see what the JK can do and get more seat time on mine. We'll be there in the afternoon. Thought I'd post here in case anyone else happens to be planning on being there then too. PM me or leave a message here.

A/C shenanigans

Hey all - I come to you with 3 separate, but related issues. First, the HVAC system in my '00 Laredo has been acting weird. If i set the vents to blow towards my face or feet, it will do as instructed, but will also blow out of the top of the dash. Whenever I get on the throttle, it will only blow out the top of the dash (on the windshield as if it was set to defrost). Is this a blend door issue? Perhaps a vacuum issue? Additionally, I noticed that my A/C was dropping a LOT of water when parked after running. I am not a complete idiot. I know some water is normal, but this was gallons of water. Upon examination, I noticed that the A/C lines and dryer where actually getting coated in a sheet of ice while operating. The melting ice was causing the huge pool of water. I know this is not normal... any suggestions?

The third A/C issue is a new development. It seemed that my cold air was failing a bit, so I charged the system today, and now I have nothing. I am assuming that I overcharged the system. Tomorrow I am going to barrow a pressure gauge from my buddy to check. If that is not it, what else could it be?

Thanks for your advice and opinions.

Driving with 33's

Monday my jeep will be lifted and the next step I'll be taking in moving up from 30" tires to 33". I have a I6, 5spd manual trans, d44 with a 3.73 ratio. I know from reading around that 3.73 is not the ideal ratio to run 33's with. I'm at the point in my current tires where they need to be replaced, but I can't afford new wheels/tires and regear at the same time.

I'd prefer to make the move to the larger tires now, and save up for the regear in the near future. My question is how rough is it to drive without a regear? Would it be ridiculous to head out on a road trip without a regear (Cleveland OH to Rehoboth DE)?

Grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 engine problem?

My Grand Cherokee WJ 4.7 v8 2002.
Hello everyone.
A few days ago in my vehicle there was a problem,
after I turned off the car (engine) in the parking lot, after a few minutes I again turned on the vehicle (engine), but the engine was working strangely, as if all cylinders are not correct, the mechanic examined the engine and said that on the cylinder 3. to the left and right side mixture does not burn.
The exhaust smells of gasoline.
The computer shows the error P0158.
Mechanic checked the spark plug and the ignition coil and said that there are function normally.
What could be causing this problem on my third cylinders?

Interior Lights

Hello, I have a 1999 Jeep grand Cherokee 4x2 4.0 Laredo (You basic of the basic). The back hatch had to be replaced because the glass was broken out and there was a major dent on the hatch. The new hatch that been put on is not hooked up on the wiring part. my interior Lights don't turn on at all even if i mainly try to turn them on, and the D P N 1 2 indicator works every now and then. Other then that Everything works great. When i hook up the wiring to the corresponding wires not everything work. The Rear hatch open indicator will stay on, and the tail lights will not come on. Any idea what could be going on?

Electrical Interior Overhead Light power draw

I've discovered that the circuit for overhead interior light on our 08 JK X continuously passes 1.3 amps. It was bought with about 75k miles from a dealer who knows nothing about the Jeep's history. The light had no bulb in it and the passenger door wires had been cut and taped off. Repaired the door wires and put a square multi-LED "bulb" in the overhead. Everything works fine, except one day my son says that the LEDs glow a tiny bit. I blew it off until the Jeep battery went bad. The battery is original so I figured, no problem. But got to thinking about the glowing LEDs and perhaps something constantly drawing power off battery. I pulled the light and tested the circuit, finding it was still pushing 1.3v. Pop the light back in and 2 of the dozen or so LEDs glow so slightly that can't see it daylight.

Has anyone experienced phantom power usage like this and have an idea where to start tracing the problem? I don't want to start tearing the Jeep apart from one end and eventually find the problem at the other. Without a suggestion, I'll start with the passenger door. Those wires were cut for a reason. Just un plug that one door and check for power draw. Am also going to check for other phantom power draws.

Suspension Opinions Experience Pics

My jeep has an 11 yr or so Rough Country 4" lift with 0.5" lift shackles running 34" LTBs. The front shocks are shot, the shackles are homemade with no middle support, and it's rough. I want a more comfortable and safer ride without giving up too much off road capabilities. So from my research, I have decided to do the YJ conversion kit and narrowed it down to OME, BDS, and RE. Looks like OME only has a 2.5" - so I do not want to go down that far. RE has a 4.5" lift and states drive shafts may need to be replaced - I am not interested in messing with that or other problems from extra height. BDS has 3.5" springs and either 0.5 or 1 3/8" shackles. I'm leaning toward 0.5" shackles for better handling and total lift of 4". For shocks, I am thinking Bilstein 5125 for 3-4" lift.

What do you think? Anyone have pics/experience of BDS 3.5" w 0.5" shackle or know body height from ground? :cheers2:

Installing remote start with factory remote start?

Ok I've asked on the sticky remote start thread and also sent the OP a PM with no luck. I have an 09 Overland 5.7 with the factory remote start. I'm wanting to install my Viper SmartStart module but I'm not sure what all needs to be done. The sticky never said anything about if the OP already had the factory remote start or possibly an aftermarket already installed and that's what he was just adding the SmartStart to or if that's all he needed.

He said the only things he had was the SmartStart module and the DBALL. Is that the only two things I need to get mine going?

Turbo actuator

Hi all

I am new here, first tread :) - I am from Denmark, so sorry if I spell a little wrong , I do my best.

My situation is that my Jeep (WH CRD 3.0) goes into limp mode and starts losing power in hard knocks whenever I am over 2000RPM, I been told by my workshop that there is at turbo pressure fail. They say I need to buy a new turbo. But after looking round on the internet I find som US and UK shops that sales only the Turbo Actuator, and that is what I think is wrong! and it would save a lot of money if I could settle only with the actuator.

My questions is; if I buy and mount some of this actuator, does i afterwards have to be calibrated it to my "old" turbo ? or is it just plug and play ?

Hope for some answers, and thanks for you time.:)

greetings Jeppe

Lost Coast Pre Run

Lost Coast Pre Run was to verify what trails could be used to make a complete loop along the Northern California Coast. The pre run covered 340 miles of which a lot of it lead to locked gates and dead ends. The final road and trail tour that has been posted offers a great trip to see some amazing sights as well as stops to be social and get to know your fellow travelers.

See the full album of pre run images here: http://ift.tt/1I4So57

The images below are of the pre run done as a last minute family trip. The start of the pre run had lots of fun back roads which sadly were very rough and not good for those who have sports cars.

After some pavement, we came to the first open stretch of dirt trail. This is a county road, which was fun and had some great views of the mountain range.

The dirt trail ends right at the coast where we turned north to follow HWY 1. For those who have ever done this section of HWY 1 you know how amazing the sights are.

We made a quick restroom stop in Mendocino as well as to allow our 14 month old to get out of the car seat for a little.

We reached the main section of dirt trail past Fort Bragg where the trail was very tight and windy. This was as fun section of trail and lead to Usla beach.

The second trail past Usla beach is more open as well as leads to a great overlook of the cost.

The end of the run to Eureka took us along the shoreline before making our way back inland to end a very long but fun day.

Should I Flush Transmission Fluid?

The carfax report of my 06 Lerado says the transmission fluid was flushed and serviced about 2.5 yrs ago when it had about 85,000 miles and I think that was the only time the fluid was flushed. Now it has about 110,000 miles. I checked the transmission fluid about 4 months ago and the it appeared to be clear and smelled normal. I am going to let a dealership check the fluid level since the car doesn't come with the dipstick but am concerned they will insist on flushing my system. The car shifts pretty smoothly except sometimes the small delay from N to R/D. Should I really get it flushed?

Thermostat change 99 4 cylinder

Hi, I am using my Dad`s account to ask this question. He is tied up with family business and I am trying to get my Jeep ready for moving on to campus.

Have a new dealer supplied thermostat and gasket. Need to remove the lower bolt on the housing but I don`t see how to loosen the serpentine belt.

YouTube wasn't much help.

Any thoughts or direction on a 4 cylinder with AC on how to loosen the belt ?

Thanks !!

Top of Fuel tank Leaking (somewhere)

Dropping a fuel tank full of fuel was not in my plans today. I though I could smell fuel yesterday after filling up but never saw a leak. Got up the AM to install new control arms and has been leaking through the night from the top. I am just trying to figure out why it would be leaking from the top when parked since 8PM last night. fuel pump wires and vent tube to canister are wet as well as front middle and bottom of tank. :brickwall

Parking brake shoe pads fell off.

I replaced the rotor and brake pads on my daughters 05 Liberty last night. When I removed the rear rotor the parking brake shoe pads fell out. It looked they had just been laying in there for awhile. Not having the parts and wanting to get it back together I just put on the new rotor.

How important is it to have that parking brake pads missing on one side. I know that it will compromise the function of the parking brake but couldn't see any other problem. All of the other parts are in tact just the pads are missing.

Lost Crankshaft Position Sensor

I decided to change the clutch in my 2000 TJ Sahara after my throwout bearing broke. It was my first time doing any mechanical work of this magnitude. I do the change out and I finally got the transmission bolted back to the engine mounts and started reconnecting the wires to various sensors. I go to reach for where the Crankshaft Position Sensor should be and it is not there. I did not disconnect it from the engine, only unbolted it from the bell housing and let it hang. I have reached around the transmission everywhere and cannot find it. I am to the point where I will just purchase a new one to stop wasting time and get my Jeep running again. My problem is I cannot locate where the Crankshaft Position Sensor connects to the wiring harness. There is no open connector and I spent all night looking for a diagram of some sort to help me identify it. Obviously finding it could help me fish out wherever the original one is hiding.

Does anyone have a photo of the actual connector in the engine bay? I have seen the black and white diagrams showing the sensor but the connector is not shown, or not detailed enough.

PS: I should note that I do not believe it is down inside the tranny with a wire stuck between the bell housing and the dust cover, I do not feel any wires sticking out, but finding the connector could shed light on this also.

Floor insulation?

Hey everyone i bought a zj last year for DIRT cheap and fixed it up a bit for the winter and this year i want to work on the interior, the carpet is shot! So i plan on changing it. the the jeep is only used for the winter so i want to try to make the inside as toasty as possible, last winter was pretty bad and the floor always felt like an ice box so i was wondering if anyone knows of any kind of cheap good insulation i could put down under the new carpet, not trying to spend $1000s on it. Someone even told me to just put the new carpet over the old and the old carpet would act as insulation, anyone know if this would work? Could i use house carpet insulation or is that too much?

Fluctuating Temperature Gauge

Last night, I was driving home from work. Jeep seemed to run just fine. I stopped for some gas up the block from the house, turned the Jeep off, gassed up and hopped back in. As soon as I started the Jeep, Check Gauges came and stayed on and the temperature gauge was in the red. Gave the Jeep a little gas and the temperature immediately started dropping back down to 210. Temp stayed between 210 and 230 the entire mile home.

This morning, Jeep started up fine and drove well the entire 15 minutes (10 miles) to work. Then I parked and left the Jeep running. Temp gauge immediately started climbing towards the red. I tapped the gas pedal and immediately the temperature dropped back down to 210-220.

2 years ago I replaced the water pump and t-stat as the pump was leaking and the t-stat because I was in there. This past winter I replaced the radiator and hoses as it cracked. I still need to replace my heater core (I've been putting it off because it's a long, tedious job from what I have read/seen).

Any ideas what this could be? I have tried searching the forums for a similar issue and, maybe I missed it but was unable to find any pertinent information.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

6.5 speakers kick panel?

Anyone build a kick panel to put in the front of their TJ? After looking yesterday I realize fitting the 6.5's in the dash seem like a nightmare and would probably be better to build a fiberglass kick panel. Looking to see what others have done. I would just get 5 1/4 component for the dash but I already have a nice set of Polk Db's I want to use up front.

Opinion on Jeep for Sale

I would appreciate any feedback on the Jeep below. I am interested but am I complete Jeep noob. This will be my first jeep and don't want to end up with something that is nothing but headaches.

Do you think the Jeep posted below is a decent deal?

"97 Jeep Wrangler has been restored less than a year ago, very clean. Rebuilt 2.5 , 5spd, A/C,4:56 gears, Detroit true track unit in the rear,8.8 rear end, slip yoke eliminator, stainless steel brake lines, open to partial trades."

I asked about rust on the Jeep as well info on the engine. This is what I received back.

"Frame of restoration, frame was sand blasted and treated with rust inhibitor, tub was sand blasted and proxy primed. Motor and jeep have less than 1500 miles on it since rebuild"

I have also attached additional pictures that were sent.

89, starting issues

So, here's the story
I bought this mj a day ago for 800$
4.0, 5 speed, RWD, d44 with 4.10s
Jeep will turn over with the turn of a key, and will fire up with a shot of break cleaner into the air intake
It's been sitting for 7 months, and the kid sold it because he can't get it running, the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires are all new
I'm guessing this is a fuel issue, I've got 6 4hole fuel injectors, and was going to start out doing the fuel relay
Unless anyone can steer me in a better direction

What size trailer and gvrw for hauling my jkur

Hello all. I'm looking to buy a flatbed car hauler to tow my jk unlimited long distances. The trailer will mainly be used to tow my yj within the Phoenix area but on occasion I will tow my jkur to places like moab and such. It's easier driving in my pickup vs driving the Jeep.

With that said, what size trailer should I get to haul the jkur? Biggest thing is gvrw and length? Most trailers I'm finding within my budget are 16ft or 18ft and 82-84" wide, dual 3500lb axles with 7000lb gvwr on the trailer. Will this be sufficient to tow my jk unlimited? It's a Rubicon on stock d44 axles and 35" tires, steel front and rear bumpers and steel rock sliders and a 2.5" trailer lift. It's no monster by any means and eventually I will toss some tons on it but for now and the next 5yrs it will remain as is. I may bump up to 37" tires on my next set but for now staying with 35s.

So will a trailer of these specs work? I'm not sure the total weight of my jk. My other option is to hold out and try to find a 16-18ft trailer with dual 5000lb axles and a 10,000 gvwr weight load. Those are way out of my price range new and when used pops up they sell within a few hours here in AZ. Ideally I would like that but wonder if the 3500lb and 7000 gvwr trailer will get the job done?

Thanks for your input.

Truck Lites vs Hella H4s w/ Raxiom LEDs

mercredi 29 juillet 2015

Okay, so the time has come for some new headlights. It's a toss up between the Truck Lite 7" or the Hella H4 conversions with Raxion LEDs from Extreme Terrain.

Now, I had the rectangle Truck Lites on my old XJ, so I know how they perform.

I've never seen the Hella H4 conversion with Raxiom LEDs before, but I've heard a lot of people like it.

I'm curious to know if there is anyone at all on here who has run both setups (or has at least seen them in person) and can tell me which one they like better?

The Truck Lites are obviously a bit more spendy, but I'm not worried about cost. I'm just looking for whichever setup will provide the best light output, that's all!

Thanks in advance!

Nominal Checking Distance for Chrysler 8.25?

Getting ready to regear the C8.25 in my 99 XJ and I'm trying to figure out the markings on the pinion gear head (Revolution Gear and Axle) to establish pinion depth. The pinion gear is typically marked with a "+" or "-" followed by a number that indicates the variance from the nominal checking distance. Near as I can tell, the markings on the pinion say "42" which I'm sure is the ring and pinion matching set number since it is also on the ring gear. The other number appears to be 4.125 which makes no sense to me at all. The only thing that even comes to mind is that 4.125 is exactly half of 8.25 but I have no idea of what relevance it would be. Maybe I'm not seeing them right, I'd appreciate any input or interpretation of the markings on the included pics. Thanks.
