2001 XJ - Lucky for me it was at the bottom of the ramp into the parking garage at work and not on the freeway I'd just exited. Complete loss of steering input, freewheeling steering wheel, goes round and round, woe, oh, woe, oh!!!!...
The coupler is a cast "C" with a bolt that supposably should be tightened to prevent the coupler from sliding off of the spined shaft at the end of the (tilt) steering column. Mine slid off, had some chew marks on the last maybe third of the spined shaft with the top two-thirds looking kind of new like the freakin coupler has been barely there for a long time.
The coupler can be inspected from the driver's footwell. Check yours. I'll be putting a socket (13mm?) and rachet driver in my console.
In my 2001 factory Jeep service manual I can find no instruction nor torque spec for the bolt in the coupler so had a minor WTF moment sitting there looking at my torque wrench, whatever, don't look like it will just fall off now.
