Tranny over temp / engine failure

2008 Commander - Has anyone had an issue with the "transmission over temp" alarm coming up then the engine shutting down less than 5 minutes later? I bought my commander in Oct 2014, took it out of state for the first time in July 2015 (65 miles) and this happened. After sitting for an hour, I tried starting and I heard a lot of knocking and fluttering and it would turn off again. I had it towed and the garage said the engine was blown... I just paid $9,000 for this car and now it looks like I have to tack on another $3-4K for a new engine? Is there something else that could be going on?

I've seen forums about the starter cable that runs to the TIPM that could be corroded at the connection points, but other than that I'm lost.

Does anyone have any advice?
