4-wheelin' disaster in the Altitude

So we have this nice few miles of beach that you can drive on (after paying for the permit)....uh oh, where is this going? :)

First time out, no worries, just followed the ruts from all the other vehicles, but the sand was a bit damp early in the season.

Second time out, nice dry sugar sand. We don't no stinckin' tire deflation! Half a mile from the road, we stop to look at something. End of trip. The Jeep burrowed down a good 18 inches or more, such that the chassis was on the sand and the wheels no longer were.

I can tell you the hard way that an 8,000 lb tow strap is like kite string to a Jeep buried axle-deep (after shoveling, of course). SNAP!!

Good samaritan had a massive 4-foot jack in the trunk, which we used to jack the back and front and insert some grating that he had under the wheels. We got out in reverse, but not after ripping the front air dam clean off while doing so. Let the air out down to 8 pounds all around before this attempt.

The mystery to me is the 4wd. Since this car does not have true 4L and 4H, some said to turn off the traction control and others said to leave it on. Only the front wheels spun at times, as if we were trying to outsmart the control and just get all four wheels moving, and we were losing the battle.

For my own learning, what type of 4wd is really 4wd all the time?
