Hello everyone... I've been doing a lot of work this summer on the jeep. I just installed an advanced adapters SYE on the transfer case and installed a Tom Woods rear shaft. I also rebuilt the front driveshaft CV joint and installed new U joints all around. Also new shocks and the jeep is running smoother than it ever has during my ownership.
I broke off a screw inside the front pinion yoke, so between the leaking seal and broken yoke I decided to change the front seal, yoke, nut and washer. Well - I had to really work on that pinion nut in order to free it up, and after about 20 minutes of working on it I got it to move. As soon as the yoke came off, I got an overpowering smell of propane/natural gas coming out of the diff housing, and it was so strong that my next door neighbor came running out of the house asking if everything was ok. Really weird.
I noticed that the pinion shaft was moving around as per the attached video... between the movement and the smell I decided that I'd hold off on the seal and new nut/washer until rebuilding the the differential. Since I'll have the diff open, I'm going to regear the axles also.
What gear ratios do you recommend? And what will I need in order to regear the diffs properly? I'm running 33" tires on there now, with a 3.5"-4" lift.
