Alright guys, sorry to post another death wobble thread but im at my whits end. I would say that I am a pretty good mechanic but I just cant figure this one out and so I thought I would try to get some help. I got a great deal on this 97 tj about 2 months ago but it had a horrible death wobble. So bad that I had to trailer it home. I figured it would be a simple fix and id be on the road crusing in my new tj. Upon first inspection, watching everything as steering wheel is turned, rocked forward and backwards, jacked up. All steering linkages and track bar were tight. One upper balljoint had just a hair of play but I didn't think that could be causing it. I came to the conclusion that the culprit was control arm bushings, which all had a little play. The front lower axle mounts were smashed and re-welded, so I chopped them off and welded on new, thicker, mounts, then I installed all new bushings except for the two upper axle bushing(which are tight) Took off down the road and the first bump I hit, death wobble. Son of a *****. Well got it back in my shop. Had helper turn steering wheel while I watched intensely.....Nothing. Well, jacked it up and shook tires up down side to side and only the one upper ball joint had a hair of play. I didn't figure it was enough to cause it so I start playing with the castor. Maybe not enough caster nope still wobbles, maybe too much caster, Nope still wobbles. So I bought four new ball joints and had tires balanced thinking that's the only things left. Put them in, put wheels on, take off down the road, first bump, AHHHHHH! Mother ******. Still there. During all of these test runs, I removed the stabilizer to make sure the wobble was completely gone and not being masked. I put it back on to see if it was at least drivable now and the stabilizer is keeping it from full on death wobble for now but the problem is still there. When you hit a bump or dip the steering wheel shakes just a little and you can tell that it wants to wobble. Im not gonna drive it like that and just keep replacing stabilizers. I don't know what else to check.
List of concerns;
1.- 6inch short arm lift :thumbdown:
2.- Drop pitman without trackbar drop
3.- bad wheels or tires
4.?????
I know that 6inch short arm lifts suck but that's what was on it when I got it and I guess im stuck with it for now, but could that be the cause of the death wobble. I know that they ride like crap and control arms are at sh**** angles, but they should be at least driveable. I may buy 4" springs to put under it eventually bc the biggest tires I ever plan to run are 35s.
I also know that you should never do a drop pitman without a trackbar drop but I thought all that would cause it bad bump steer. Could that be the cause? Everything is tight as can be. Track bar, tie rod ends, pitman arm, control arms, wheel bearings. I was confident when I bought it that I could fix it but Im beginning to think it cant be fixed. Im just about out of hair to pull. Thanks in advance guys.
